Drive by Daniel Pink

Dan Pink's book on new research into motivation is a good summary of new thinking on what motivates us. An excellent read for anyone in a leadership position. Plenty of thought provoking stuff herein. A few of my favorites:

A key new idea is that rewards help narrow our focus - closing out creative (heuristic) solutions in favor of direct conventional focus (algorithmic) solutions. i.e. rewards are good in short term, but not in long term - long term motivation requires intrinsic motivation (p.44). This whole section turns B. F. Skinner's reward psychology on it's head.

Self Determination Theory (SDT - summarized p 72): Three innate psychological needs: competence, autonomy, relatedeness; all are more important than carrot and stick. Make these three flourish in the work environment.

FMRI scans of rewards ($) for tasks shows same response as cocaine or amphetamines - a burst of dopamine into the nucleus accumbens, which pleasures, then dissapates, leaving us wanting more.

Autotelic experience = flow (re: Czkczentmihaly) P.129 Clear goals, immediate feedback, challenges well matched to our abilities. Children naturally work in flow; we unlearn flow as we mature. p. 130. This fits with the Tal Ben-Shahar lectures on flow in his course on happiness at Harvard.
